Books on Screen - Next Session october 13

Dormont Public Library has been chosen by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council to host a series of book discussion programs called “Read About It!” These discussions will be held through December.

Our theme is “Books on Screen”. Led by Kathy M. Newman, Associate Professor of English and Cultural Studies at Carnegie Mellon University, the discussion group will explore the relationship between literature and film.

All programs begin at 7 PM.

  • October 13: Steven Millhauser's Eisenheim the Illusionist (filmed as Neil Burger's The Illusionist)
  • November 3: Ian McEwan's Atonement (film version directed by Joe Wright)
  • December 1: Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner (film version directed by Marc Forster)

Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. The program is free and open to the general public, and requires no special knowledge about literature. Participants will receive their own copies of the books featured in “Books on Screen”, and DVDs of the films may be borrowed through the library. To register, contact Dormont Public Library at 412-531-8754 at least one week before the session you wish to attend.

This program is supported with federal Library Services and Technology Act funds administered by the Office of Commonwealth Libraries.

Folklore and Oral Histories Presentation - October 30, 7 PM

Dormont Public Library hosts the Commonwealth Speaker and Erie Art Museum Folklorist and Education Director Kelly Armor's presentation "All Stories Are True - And Some Have Actually Happened" on Thursday, October 30, at 7 PM.

Kelly Armor is a professional storyteller and musician who finds that stories are one of the surest ways to engage audiences of different ages. As long as people talk to one another, the oral tradition will be tenacious and strong. Most stories from this tradition are not concerned with literal truth, but reflect truths about the human condition. Participants will hear a variety of folktales, urban legends, and family anecdotes. They will also have a chance to discuss the roles played by the stories, jokes, and songs they've learned, and how they've been handed down from generation to generation.

Registration is required; to register, call us at 412-531-8754 or come to the front desk. Please register by October 25.

This presentation is a program of the Pennsylvania Humanities Council.

Special Presentation - What Do I Say? A Guide to Funeral Etiquette - October 21, 7:30 PM

It is always difficult to know what to say to a person when someone dies. Most people attend very few funerals in their lifetime, so one might not know what is appropriate or necessary when it comes to visitations, funeral services, or graveside services. This presentation by Laughlin Memorial Chapel is designed to answer common questions about being there for an acquaintance, friend, or family member during one of the most difficult times in life.

Sponsored by Dormont Women's Club and Dormont Public Library. To register, please call 412-531-8754
