- Summer Reading 2008
Dormont Library's Summer Reading Program for 2008 continues with special bug-themed Storytimes and other events.
- Don't miss the Carnegie Science Center and GlaxoSmithKline's Science in the Summer program, from Tuesday, July 22 to Friday, July 25. Second and third graders meet at 10 AM, while 4th-6th graders meet at 11:15 AM. Attendance at all four sessions is required. Space is limited; come to the front desk or call at 412-531-8754 to sign up!
- You can register for the Summer Reading Program any time until the closing party on Saturday, August 2 at 11 AM, with a special black light puppet performance of The Big Bug Show by Pizzicato Puppets.
- This year's theme for Read To Me and elementary school children is "Catch the Reading Bug", and the theme for young adults (6th grade and up) is "Metamorphosis".
- There will be raffles and prizes for each book read throughout the summer. During the last week of the program, each book you read counts double!
- Special programs will continue all summer long. There are too many to list here, so come to the library and pick up a flyer to find out what's in store!
- Adult Summer Reading - Library Bingo - July 1–August 31
Dormont Library invites all adult readers to read books and win prizes with Library Bingo!
- Starting July 1, come to the front desk and pick up your Library Bingo card. For each library book you read, mark down the matching square on your card. Complete a row vertically, horizontally, or diagonally and earn a chance to win in our Grand Prize Drawing.
- Each row you complete earns you an extra chance in the drawing, and any participant who reads at least eight books is guaranteed a prize. One name will be drawn for the Grand Prize.
- Bingo cards must be returned by September 2. A reception and prize ceremony will be held in September (date to be announced).
- Online Fine Payment
- Patrons who have overdue fees of $2.00 or more can now pay their fines online using a Visa, MasterCard, or Discover Card.
- New Computers Are Here
Dormont Library's computer upgrade is complete!
- These new computers offer several new capabilities to our patrons. All systems now have Microsoft Office 2007 installed, as well as Internet Explorer 7 and the Mozilla Firefox web browser. The new computers can also burn DVDs and CDs.
- Patrons who have used Microsoft Office 2003 will notice that Office 2007 has a different user interface. Microsoft has provided interactive guides for the Office 2007 suite to help you get accustomed to this new software.
- The new computers no longer have floppy disk drives. Files stored on floppy drives are not accessible with the new computers.
- We recommend that patrons purchase a USB flash drive (available at low cost from most major retailers) to store their files. USB flash drives have more capacity and are faster, more durable, and more reliable than floppy disks.
- Files can also be stored online—if you have an account with a web mail provider, you can e-mail files to yourself, or you can use services such as MediaFire to temporarily store documents online.
- Computer lab staff can assist you with transferring your files from floppy disk to a USB flash drive.
- Yoga Instruction
- Yoga classes are temporarily suspended for the summer.
